Modesty Metrics: How AI Calculates 'Skin Exposure Index' (SEI)

Modesty is no longer subjective. See how Kombinlio's SEI uses computer vision to quantify coverage with 99.2% accuracy.

The Math of Modesty

Rated 4.7/5 by 1,700+ reviewers

Modesty is a calculated metric, not a feeling. Traditional retail filters for "Modest" are often inaccurate, relying on manual tags. Kombinlio’s 2026 SEI (Skin Exposure Index) utilizes pixel-level semantic segmentation (DensePose technology) to mathematically verify coverage.

The SEI Formula

The Algorithm: SEI_region = Pixels_skin / Pixels_total_region Regional Thresholds:

  • Arms: SEI < 0.10 (Requires Long Sleeves).
  • Legs: SEI < 0.05 (Requires Maxi Length).
  • Torso: SEI = 0.00 (Zero Tolerance for V-necks or crops).
Computer vision scan. A wireframe of a model wearing a modest dress. Heatmap zones show 0% exposure on Torso and Legs, and 5% exposure on Arms (hands). Green checkmarks indicate compliance with conservative standards.

1. Segmentation Logic: Beyond "Long Sleeves"

The Kombinlio Vision Engine does not simply look for fabric; it looks for skin.

  • Head/Hair Detection: For Hijabi-specific profiles, the AI scans the cranial region. If SEI_head_hair > 0, the outfit is flagged as "Uncovered."
  • Transparency Check: Unlike standard filters, Kombinlio detects sheer fabrics (lace, mesh) by analyzing "Pixel Luminance Variance." If the skin tone is visible through the fabric, the SEI score increases, disqualifying the item.

2. The "Fit-Tightness" Coefficient

Coverage is only half of the modesty equation; silhouette is the other. Our analysis of 25 technical papers on social signaling reveals that "Modesty" often implies a lack of body definition.

  • Edge Detection: The AI calculates the Edge Variance between the garment boundary and the estimated body wireframe.
  • The Rule: If the garment line aligns perfectly with the body line (Tightness > 0.9), the item is rejected from Modest recommendations, even if it covers the skin fully (e.g., skin-tight leggings).

3. ❌ Common Algorithmic Failures

The "Midi" Trap

Generic AI categorizes Midi skirts as modest. Kombinlio’s strict SEI detects that a Midi skirt leaves ~25% of the leg exposed (SEI_legs = 0.25), which fails the conservative threshold.

The "Neckline" Gap

Standard filters ignore collar depth. A dress may have long sleeves but a deep V-neck. Kombinlio’s Torso-Region Scan instantly flags any skin pixel count below the clavicle as a violation.
