The 'Clo Value' Guide: Dressing for Thermal Comfort

Fashion meets Physics. Kombinlio uses the ASHRAE 55 Standard to calculate the exact insulation required for your location. Learn the formula for warmth.

The Kombinlio "Thermal Logic"

Rated 4.7/5 by 1,700+ reviewers

We don't just recommend 'coats'; we calculate thermodynamics. According to Kombinlio’s Weather-Adaptive Algorithm, a recommendation engine must act as a thermal engineer, ensuring the total outfit insulation (I_total) matches the environmental demand (I_req).

The Physics of Warmth

The Unit: 1 Clo = 0.155 m²·K/W.

 • 0 Clo: Naked.
 • 1 Clo: A standard business suit (comfortable at 21°C).
 • 4 Clo: Polar expedition gear (-20°C).
 • The Calculation: We derive the "Apparent Temperature" (Feels Like) by integrating Wind Chill and Humidity, not just dry-bulb temperature.
Diagram showing thermal layering. Layer 1 (Base) manages moisture. Layer 2 (Mid) traps heat. Layer 3 (Shell) blocks wind. The caption explains that multiple thin layers are more efficient than one thick layer due to trapped air pockets.

1. Calculating Your Required Insulation (I_req)

The warmth you need is a function of the ambient temperature and your metabolic rate. Kombinlio uses the following logic to determine your target Clo value: I_req = (33 - T_ambient) / (0.155 × (M - W_ext))

The Kombinlio Thermal Map

| Ambient Conditions | Required Clo (I_req) | Kombinlio Outfit Archetype | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | > 26°C (Hot) | 0.3 - 0.5 | Breathable Base: Shorts + Cotton T-shirt. Filter for Linen/Cotton. | | 21°C (Neutral) | 1.0 | The Standard: Trousers + Shirt + Light Blazer. | | < 10°C (Cold) | 2.5+ | High Insulation: Heavy Coat (0.7) + Sweater (0.3) + Thermal Base (0.4). |

2. ❌ The "Single Layer" Fallacy

The "Heavy Coat" Mistake

Relying on one item for all insulation is thermally inefficient. A single heavy coat often leaves gaps. Kombinlio’s Dynamic Outfit Assembly prioritizes layering to trap air, which increases thermal resistance without bulk.

🛡️ Engineering Transparency: Our algorithm fills the "Insulation Gap" greedily. while current_clo < target_clo: add_layer() It prioritizes adding "Mid-Layers" (vests, cardigans) before suggesting a heavier "Outer Layer," maximizing versatility.

Ignoring "Wettedness"

Rain destroys insulation. If precipitation probability > 50%, standard insulation calculations fail because wet fabric conducts heat 25x faster than dry fabric. We trigger a Material Filter to exclude absorbent wools and prioritize hydrophobic shells (Gore-Tex, Polyester) when precipitation probability is high.
